Europa #272, Mostly Intermission

st-6th September No building. Working at the computer show in Wellington.

th September Ah, the feel of fibreglass and resin again. The layup of the rib areas went very well. I had prepared myself by making a clear drawing of which layers of cloth went where before this layup. With multiple layers of cloth all interlinked this really helped the process. The only puzzling bit in the layup is where one of the reinforcing hinge pieces actually wraps around into the root. I measured and remeasured to ensure I got it right and I am sure I am. The hinge when it is fitted sits only a few millimetres from the edge of the root and as the hinge cloth is about 15mm wider than the hinge at each edge the cloth has no option but to go into the root area.

th-9th September Trimmed the edges of the layup. This wasn't a major job but I did note that my fibre was settling out of line at the root. T discourage an deviation from a nice clean line I have clamped a straight edge in place as it goes through its stronger cure over the next few weeks.

th September Sanded back the lip on the trim tab. The flat edge of a knife works wonders at peeling back fibreglass.

th September No building. Public speaking engagement.

th -13th September Prepared for the trim tab closeout layup. As usual, preparation consists primarily of cutting cloth and getting the work area ready. As this layup is along the edge of the trim tab I have decided to work with the part held vertically along its leading edge for ease of access. I used a couple of chunks of offcut foam with a V cut in them to secure the piece in place.

th -15th September The layup was done on Saturday with a tidy up session on Sunday. No major problems as the layup is a simple one consisting of laying in a couple of plies of bid together with some strengthening brackets where the hinges will go.

th -30th September No building, working in Atlanta and the UK. I have left the end plate of the trim tab until time when I layup the port trim tab.
